We’ve all heard the many rumors circulating about rebuilding ball bearing turbochargers at one point or another:
“They’re expensive to rebuild!”
“You can’t rebuild them!”
“You can’t get the parts!”
etc….

Well, I’m here to clear the air. Unfortunately, some of these rumors hold truth with certain brands, particularly Precision and Garrett, due to the fact that both companies do not sell the bearings separately leaving your options to either purchasing a whole new center cartridge (basically everything aside from both housings), which is typically expensive, or keeping it as a super cool door stop! Not!
So that begs the question – is it worth it to go with a Precision or Garrett ball bearing turbo if they’re impossible to rebuild?
Truthfully, that’s quite a broad question and it depends on the application, however, these turbos are extremely reliable and can last a long time when properly maintained through regular oil changes (with quality oil as well), turbo-timing; or at least leaving your car running for 1 minute prior to shutting off if you don’t have one, and having proper sized oil feed and return lines, not over-boosting, maintaining a filter for street use, etc.
Now, if just the seals need replacement, that’s not a problem. The inability to rebuild Precision and Garrett ball bearing turbochargers only applies when the bearings are damaged or out of tolerance.
“Ok…so which turbochargers are rebuildable?”
Again, hypothetically speaking, if your bearings are worn and/or out of tolerance, Innovative and Comp Turbo. If just your seals are worn, those can be replaced regardless of the brand.
